LG Autonomy: Tosin Awodi-Oke hails Tinubu for bringing governance closer to the grassroots
The founder of Awodi-Oke foundation and member of the All Progressives Congress,APC, Engr. Tosin Kolade Awodi-Oke, has applauded the Supreme Court judgement instituted at the behest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which barred the 36 state governors from further retaining or utilising funds meant for 774 LG.
Awodi-Oke, in a statement made available to this newspaper on Sunday, said the implementation of the judgement would usher in effective development at the grassroots level.
While encouraging the citizens to actively participate in grassroots politics to bring “much-needed governance closer to the people, says solid structures start from the foundation.
He noted that ,the governors had hijacked the Local Government administration in Nigeria, by relying on a controversial section of the 1999 Constitution as amended, with no meaningful development at the grassroots.
Recall that ,in the last few days, the judgement has elicited jubilation from local government officials, and residents in several states across the country. Many people said the ruling was long overdue and the best for the nation’s democracy.
Mr. Kolade also urged the President to immediately commence the implementation of the Court judgment, saying local Government Councils need to start getting their monthly allocations immediately without any further delays which impacts of good governance would begin to be felt by the people at the grassroots.
He charged the local government chairmen to plan for the tasks ahead as they would be answerable and accountable for how they spend their monthly allocations .
